Cells for Regeneration

In our laboratory we investigate multiple cell types to be used for regenerative medicine purposes. For cartilage repair, chondrocytes from bovine and human tissue are isolated using collagenase digestion and passaged until the required cell number is achieved.

Due to undesired changes in phenotype which result from passaging, we also work with mesenchymal stromal cells isolated from bone marrow and adipose tissue. These cells can be differentiated into fat, bone and cartilage-like tissue through the use of specific media cocktails.  Recent work is centered around the isolation of progenitor cells from cartilage tissue

A second arm of our research platform investigates applications in neural tissue engineering. For these projects our laboratory uses both primary rat cortical neurons as well as patient derived iPS neuroprogenitor cells.

Neural Stem Cells
