Microbiome

The microbiome plays an important role in the maintenance of a healthy body. When its equilibrium is altered, the resultant dysbiosis can result in “leakiness” of the gut, leading to high levels of endotoxins in circulation. Bacterial remnants can even end up inside the joints, and their presence has been correlated with greater severity of osteoarthritis (OA). In this project, we investigate potential correlations among specific strains of bacteria, circulatory endotoxins, and progression of OA. These results will help us envision next-generation interventions to alleviate OA symptoms and prevent disease progression. These interventions could include diet, microbiome transplantation and endotoxin traps.
